Capacity, fit, and load distribution matter more than brand logos. Here is a practical checklist before your next trail purchase.
Finding a pack that fits your torso length is the first step toward comfortable miles. Measure from your C7 vertebra to the top of your hip bones, then match that range to the manufacturer's size chart.
Day hikers often do well with 20 to 35 liters, while weekend trips typically call for 40 to 55 liters. Look for padded hip belts, ventilated back panels, and easy access to water reservoirs or bottles.
Before you buy, load the pack in the store with weight similar to what you carry on trail. Walk around, adjust straps, and confirm the load sits close to your body without pulling on your shoulders.
